ISU’s George Conditt IV Joins Puerto Rico National Team
Iowa State forward George Conditt IV will join the Puerto Rico National Team in June, in hopes of helping the country reach the Summer Olympics in basketball.
Conditt was selected to be a part of that team, which will go through a qualifying tournament in this summer for one spot in the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Conditt and the rest of the team will practice in Puerto Rico from June 1-10.
“It is an honor to be chosen to play on this team,” Conditt said in an Iowa State release. “The opportunity to represent not only myself, but to represent an entire country, is a great feeling.”
Conditt was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and was recruited out of Corliss High School three years ago. But he’s played for the Puerto Rican team before, as part of its under-18 FIBA Americas Championship team, which finished fourth in that tournament.
Because members of Conditt’s family are natives of Puerto Rico, he is allowed by Olympic and FIBA rules to play for that nation’s team.
After workouts, the team will travel to Europe for warm-up games in Greece and Croatia before heading to the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade, Serbia, from June 29-July 4.
There, Puerto Rico will have to slug it out with five other teams for one spot, first in group play and then in bracket play. Puerto Rico is in a group with Italy and Senegal. The top two teams move on to bracket play.
The other three teams in the tournament are the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, and Serbia.
