An interception in each of the last two games was great, but Iowa State safety T.J. Mutcherson may prefer if the ball isn’t thrown his way.
That would mean he was doing his job in preventing Oklahoma State quarterback Daxx Garman from connecting on his most successful pass, the deep ball, on Saturday (11 a.m., FS1).
“On a lot of his (throws) they don’t,” said coach Paul Rhoads on safeties impacting Garman. “It’s simply isolation and it’s not just, OK, let’s just throw one deep. There is reach to it and decisions when to and when not to.
“He is not going to throw deep into double coverage very much. He is not going to throw deep with the opportunity for safeties to be involved very often.”
The more Mutcherson is hovering around receivers downfield the less likely it is that No. 21 Oklahoma State (3-1, 1-0 Big 12) will connect on a big passing play.
Or at least that is ISU’s hope, and it’s fine with Mutcherson, who says he isn’t thinking about potential game-changing plays like his recent interceptions.
