Kansas Men’s Basketball 2023-24 Basketball Schedule Analysis

NCAA Basketball: Kansas at Michigan State

The 2023-24 Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball schedule is complete and here is an analysis of the entire schedule as basketball season nears.

Season Opener

Kansas opens the season at home against North Carolina Central on Nov. 6. The Jayhawks follow that up with a home game against Manhattan on Nov. 10 before they spend the next two weeks away from home.

Off to Hawaii

The Jayhawks will be at the Maui Invitational which will be played in Honolulu this year instead of Maui due to the wildfires that ravaged that area earlier this year. The Jayhawks will open with Chaminade, which serves as the host school.

Best Non-Con Game

The Jayhawks have a host of them, but whenever they tangle with Kentucky it tends to be a great game. They’ll meet the Wildcats in Chicago for the State Farm Champions Classic on Nov. 14 at the United Center.

Big EAST/Big 12 Battle

The Jayhawks will face defending national champion UConn on Dec. 1 at Allen Fieldhouse. It has the chance to be the best of any of the Big 12-Big East Battle games, and there are some good ones on the schedule this year.

Mid-Major Danger Game

It’s hard to find a mid-major game that could reach up and grab the Jayhawks, but the game against Yale on Dec. 22 is interesting. It’s right before the holidays, which can always be dangerous for a high-major team if they’re reach to check out for the holidays. Yale won 21 games last season and shared the Ivy League regular-season title with Princeton.

Big 12 Opener

The Jayhawks will start the Big 12 slate at home at Allen Fieldhouse against the TCU Horned Frogs on Jan. 6. The Jayhawks have had some recent struggles against the Horned Frogs in the regular season.

Big 12 Road Opener

The Jayhawks will get their first taste of one of the four new schools when the go to Orlando to face the UCF Knights on Jan. 10.

Brutal Big 12 Stretch

A five-game stretch from Jan. 27 to Feb. 10 will really test the Jayhawks. That road starts at Iowa State and then at home against Oklahoma State, a pair of teams that Kansas tends to struggle with, no matter how good both teams are. Then, Kansas gests Houston at home on Feb. 3, followed by the road trip to Kansas State and then a home game against Baylor. This could be the area of the schedule that could give Kansas some issues.

What Should Happen?

Kansas enters the  2023-24 season as the preseason favorite in the Big 12, thanks to three returning starters and pulling one of the top transfers in center Hunter Dickinson. Kansas plays a brutal non-conference schedule, but it always does and it wouldn’t be surprising for them to have a loss or two entering Big 12 play. The demise of the double-round robin might allow them to emerge from Big 12 play with only one or two losses, as opposed to the three or four they’ve taken the past few seasons.
